For the first time in over a decade, he will welcome guests to a celebration of Poe's life and work in his hometown.

The state of Nevada produces more gold than four countries, and most of the gold in Nevada is mined in Elko. Hunter S. Thompson quipped: "The federal government owns 90% of the entire country in Elko, and it's the largest gold mine in the United States and the second largest in North America.

The city has a path along the Humboldt River that gets filled in from time to time, making Elko one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state of Nevada. It is a small town of just over 1,000 people, but it can serve as a hub for tourism, business, recreation, education and a host of other activities for most of northern and central Nevada.

The annual rainfall averaged 81 days, and the highest rainfall in 24 hours was on August 27, 1970. Most rainfall in a calendar year was recorded between July 1923 and June 1924, recorded on July 23, 1924 and June 24, 1925.

In June 2010, Casino Express moved its headquarters to Boise, Idaho, and changed its name to Xtra Airways. United Airlines also served Elko with passenger jets in the 1970s and early 1980s. El Koi Regional Airport would become the site of a new airport for the Nevada Department of Transportation (NVDOT) and the Las Vegas International Airport.

The gold boom of the 1980 "s, which ended in bankruptcy in the late 1990" s, left a large number of abandoned houses in the city, leaving local governments struggling to survive with lower tax revenues. The harsh desert environment around Elko, along with the high cost of living and high crime rate, has made El Koi difficult to include other industries. This has led to cities having a high unemployment rate and low levels of economic development.

The median income for households in the city is $48,608, and the median income for families is $52,754. 39.2% have children under 18 years of age, 53.5% are married couples living together, 32.0% are non-family, 9.1% have a housekeeper without a husband and 7.6% are 65 years or older. The population is spread across all age groups, which is why El Koi has a high percentage of young people, especially under 18, while the poverty line is at or below $16,000 for adults and $14,500 for children, including a median household income of $12,843 for a family of four.

The racial composition of the city is 83% black, 16% white, 6% Hispanic, 3% Asian, 1% Native American, 2% African American and 0.5% Latino.
